🏆 Black Engineer of the Day: Robert F. Smith 🏦
Robert F. Smith is a world-renowned Chemical Engineer and tech visionary who decoded the "engineering of wealth." While many know him as the billionaire founder of Vista Equity Partners, his success is rooted in the rigorous logic of an engineer. 🧪💻
Before conquering Wall Street, Smith was a relentless innovator. As a high schooler, he called Bell Labs every Monday for five months until they gave him an internship meant for college students. He went on to earn his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University (where the engineering school now bears his name). 🎓🏗️
His engineering career wasn't just a phase—it was a period of high-level invention. At Kraft General Foods, Smith earned four patents (two in the U.S. and two in Europe) for developing advanced coffee filtration and brewing systems. He eventually realized that "engineers are skilled at creating order out of messes," applying that same principle to the world of enterprise software and private equity. ☕📉
The Lesson: Robert F. Smith proves that an engineering mindset isn't just for building machines—it’s for building empires and liberating communities. 🏁🚀

🏆 Black Engineer of the Day: Dr. Jeanette Epps
Dr. Jeanette Epps is a distinguished aerospace engineer and NASA astronaut whose career represents the pinnacle of technical resilience and orbital expertise. Often recognized for her endurance in the face of mission delays, Epps is, first and foremost, a high-level researcher whose work has refined the mechanics of both terrestrial and space flight.
Before she ever reached the stars, Epps was a pioneer in smart materials and automotive safety. During her tenure at Ford Motor Company, she secured multiple U.S. patents for developing collision-location detection systems—technology designed to save lives on the road. Her technical acumen caught the attention of the CIA, where she served as a Technical Intelligence Officer, applying her Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering to the most complex national security challenges.
In 2024, as a mission specialist on SpaceX Crew-8, Epps transitioned from designing systems to operating them in the most unforgiving environment known to man. During her 235 days aboard the International Space Station, she managed advanced robotics and conducted critical stem cell research, proving that Black women are not just passengers in the space race, but the lead engineers of our multi-planetary future.
Her legacy reminds us that Black engineers don’t just reach the finish line—we have the grit to stay the course until the mission is won.
